How to Clean a Cello Fingerboard

I never heard anyone else recommend ... lubricating ... the fingerboard. I'll try this cleaning sequence. I noticed my fingerboard is quite dirty during practice today.
I do wonder about playing sul tasto (over the fingerboard) after treating the strings with petroleum jelly. I think we would want the petroleum jelly cleaned carefully off the strings up a bit above the end of the fingerboard.
